Last Week’s Gaming

Being sick and busy is the worst. But I did get some gaming in last week!

I am still sick and clearing up a few things for work before taking some time off. This left almost no time for gaming last week. Boo. But it’s not all gloomy news. I did get to the end of Chapter 2 in Bravely Default as I wanted, plus I am taking time off work soon. Yay!

This should also be the last week of the intermittent posting, all going well. But that I will get into next week, if and when I know that all has fallen into place.

And now, onto what I did get to play!

Halo 3 – Xbox One

It’s been quite some time since I fired up the Xbox, and enough time had passed that I even pushed past my Halo burnout. There wasn’t a tremendous amount of progress made, but any progress after none for so long is better than nothing!

Months ago, I stopped playing even though I wanted to play the Halo series. I can see why the series is so popular, and the story beats are still good enough to keep me going.

Oh, those controls, though. Not bad overall, but I cannot remember how to reload every time I start up Halo. RB is not the reload button! And using equipment like cloaking? I will need to look that up before my next session.

But all going well over the Easter break, I can add Halo 3 to my completed games list. Fingers crossed!

Super Mario 3D World – Switch

I grabbed up all of the Mario games on Switch when they came out, as I haven’t played many of them at all. A little bit of Super Mario Bros, I think I am about halfway through Super Mario Odysee, and that’s about it.

But as Super Mario 3D World was a recent acquisition, it was just sitting on the Switch menu, and I wanted to give it a go. I have no real idea of what is going on, other than Bowser has stolen Faeries, and Mario and Co will rescue them?

But I cleared the first 2 levels, and Mario looks adorable in his catsuit. Even the sounds are hilarious! I don’t think I will sit down and make a determined run to finish it soon. At some point, I think I will do a Mario series run and play them in order. But that is future plans, and I will talk about this later.

At least it isn't Peach this time

Bravely Default 2 – Switch

Last week, I talked about my progress. Saturday night, I made my goal of finishing Chapter 2. The Crystal hunt is going well!

As usual, I won’t talk about many details, but the story this week got dark. Not the overall plot, but some of the finer points in the story definitely took a turn.

Now, the point that made my eyes open wide isn’t new in the bad guy toolkit. I even suspected what had happened earlier in the game but dismissed it as “They wouldn’t go there”. Well, I was wrong.

This isn't an out there optional boss - this character hits a lot of unexpected points

Why am I talking about this? The number of people looking at a Nintendo game with cutesy graphics and assuming it’s for kids hasn’t changed. Bravely Default 2 is rated M, and now I can see why.

This isn’t a rating rant. I am a supporter of the rating system overall. I just want the R+ rating in Australia to be bought into line with other forms of media.

Today I am only highlighting that for anyone that looks at a game like Bravely Default 2 and thinks to themselves ‘kids game’, this story isn’t aimed at younger players, and I can’t wait to see where the story goes.

Images like this can be misleading as to who the target audience is
