Edgar Allan Poe. I find it both amusing and a little disappointing that I have generally heard Poe named as ‘The writer of that Simpson’s episode where Bart turns into a crow’.
All that aside, Edgar Allan Poe has contributed a tremendous amount to the world of literature. He is considered by some as a major contributor to both the Detective Fiction and Science Fiction genres but is best known for his mysterious and sometimes macabre short stories.
Masque of the Red Death is one of such stories, where a vain noble holds a party for the social elite while the plague ravishes the rest of the city. Ultimately though, the plague in the form of the Red Death catches up with the noble and the end is fairly obvious today.
So when I saw this was being made into a board game, I was fairly intrigued. It’s a social deduction game with programmed movements, special powers and bluffing elements, a unique mix to say the least. I am not going to go too much into the game here, but I will suggest checking out the Kickstarter page for more information.
Normally when I bring up a Kickstarter project, it’s because I am backing it or at the very least seriously considering it. This is a unique project because I can pretty much guarantee I will be buying the game, but I don’t think I will be backing the Kickstarter.
This is a game coming from IDW, and it is definitely being published. The Kickstarter is a limited edition deluxe version project, with what looks like quality miniatures to take the place of standees that represent the party goers, and some great art from Gris Grimly.
My main hesitation of backing this is because of the high cost of delivery to Australia, but as mentioned I will be getting this when released without hesitation. I am not sure why IDW is releasing the deluxe version this way, it may be an experiment, it may be a way of generating interest. Either way, it’s a project that I think has merit at the very least, and therefore worthy of sharing.
You will have to be quick though – there are only about four days left of the project!
Check out the Kickstarter page here.
Until next time,
