Mansions of Madness: Mother’s Embrace has been brought back to life as Arkham Horror: Mother’s Embrace!
It was only the other day I was saying how I was sad the video game version of Mansions of Madness was cancelled. Well, today I woke up to a great bit of news – Mother’s Embrace is not only coming out next year! And it’s coming to consoles as well!
It looks like the project has undergone fairly significant changes, hence the move from Mansions of Madness to the more general Arkham Horror major title.
The original vision of Mother’s Embrace felt very close to a digital adaption of Mansions of Madness. You can see this in an early developer diary video below.
With the move from the specific Mansions of Madness setting to the more general Arkham Horror setting, I am excited. I really hope this is an opening for more exploration of Arkham overall. I was excited to explore set Mansions before, now I hope I can explore more of Arkham!
Even if this exploration comes in waves as expansions, this will open a lot of gameplay and narrative opportunities.
Now, the gameplay sounds like it is more of an X-Com style tile strategy game, including combat. This, to me, is making the adaption even more faithful to the board game original, and I think it will work well.
From the official description:
The year is 1926, and a professor of astronomy is found dead in her mansion, the apparent victim of a heinous murder. Players must pick from 12 of the most iconic protagonists from the Arkham Horror universe, each with a unique skill set, and assemble a team of investigators to uncover the secrets behind this mysterious death.
So the Mansions version of Mother’s Embrace felt like you picked an investigator and tried to solve a mystery. Now, just like in the board adaptions, you can choose your team of investigators. Just like in the board games, the new Mother’s Embrace will
There really isn’t any more bits of information to share, unfortunately. Still, I am excited to bring Mother’s Embrace back into the actively watching pile after reluctantly removing it from my Steam wishlist last week as a ‘dead’ item.
There are several new screenshots that I have included below for you to check out. You can be sure I will be doing little updates as more comes out on Arkham Horror: Mother’s Embrace as news becomes available.
Wait, hang on – the consoles are for Switch, PS4 and Xbox One! What about the new consoles?
I didn’t miss this either. At the moment, I am working under the assumption that Arkham Horror: Mother’s Embrace will work on the new consoles via backwards compatibility.
This is just an educated guess, but it makes sense that it would be easier to fix anything that stopped backwards compatibility than to upgrade the games. Also, it doesn’t restrict the audience to a new console – always a bonus! So the announcement being aimed at ‘old’ consoles I don’t see as a big deal.
Until next time,
