2021 Gaming Challenges

New year, new gaming challenges ahoy. But this year, it will be a little bit different.

As I mentioned yesterday, 2020 has changed a lot of gaming habits in many ways. My home gaming group stopped for obvious reasons, and digital games night was fun but not quite the same.

But just because things change doesn’t mean that it’s a bad thing. I am really excited about my 2021 goals, and the forced change in gaming habits coupled with missed 2020 goals has helped form my trials for 2021.

Some of my goals include gaming from streaming and videos so that it all works in together. I want to do certain things, so why not have them in my goals for the year?

Board Games Challenges 2020 Review

So just as a reminder, this is how my Board Game Goals for 2020 went:

Goal 1: Record 100 New Game Plays

Goal 2: Play 250 Games ✅

Goal 3: Get specific games to the table

🗶 Pandemic Legacy Season 2

🗶 The 7th Continent

✅ Clank! Legacy

2020 had me completing only one of my three gaming goals. As this involved hundreds of games that I would play with a couple of different groups, I am not really concerned overall. I had a heap of fun playing what I did get to play, which is always the main point!

I made the goal of board games played thanks to digital gaming but fell short in the number of new games recorded. I also missed a couple of the specific games I wanted to play. Pandemic Legacy I wanted to play with others (hard in quarantine). The 7th Continent I just never got around to sitting and learning.

2021 Board Gaming Goals

In 2020, as in years before, I focused on playing lots of different games every week. This year, I have a focus on playing larger games I have been putting off.

What does this mean? Well, basically my Saturday games day with Alpal will be alternating campaign/legacy type games with some lighter games. Instead of playing two or three games a week with Alpal, we will focus on games like Clank! Legacy and Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion. We will still get many games played this way. We will be focusing on refining our gaming experiences instead of sampling a bit of everything.

That said, I am still aiming at getting 100 new titles played this year. How would I accomplish this if I am explicitly seeking to repeat games during the year with Alpal? Print and Play games!

That’s right. I need to play a heap of these games to find what will work streaming as a group game. Oh, what a terrible situation to find myself in!

Goal 1: Record 100 New Game Plays

Goal 2: Play 250 Games

Goal 3: Get specific games to the table

  1. Clank! Legacy
  2. Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion
  3. Posthuman Saga
  4. Arkham Horror: The Card Game
  5. The 7th Continent
  6. Chronicles of Crime: Millenium Series

  2. Control - PS4
  3. Maneater - PS4
  4. Fairy Tail - PS4
  5. Marvel's Spider-Man: Remastered - PS5

Wow, thanks to my holidays near the end of the year, I absolutely crushed my video game challenges last year! I even managed four Platinum trophies with my PlayStation 5. OK, I probably would have excluded Astro’s Playroom and Bugsnax based on the short playtimes, but I still got them.

So my video game challenges will be somewhat similar this year, but my focus is on clearing my backlog. I hope this will be the first part of the year, and then I can look forward to the first crop of next-gen games in the latter half of 2021!

2021 Video Gaming Goals

While still completing a specific number of games, in 2021, I want to complete some games that I have been putting off playing. Each of these games I have played just enough to know I need to put time into them.

A couple of these games I am dedicating time to by playing them on stream. That’s right – the Witcher series is on this list, building up to finishing The Witcher 3 in 2022!

So if I look at streaming the Witcher for 2 hours a week for 45 weeks, that’s 90 hours to finish both games. As I am only looking to finish them, this should be a pretty leisurely completion goal.

Platinum/Completing games I am keeping to five games. There will probably be a couple of my backlog games that I will want to Platinum. I don’t like making the Platinum call until I am deep into playing a title. Time will tell.

Goal 1: Finish 10 backlog games

  1. The Witcher (Streaming)
  2. The Witcher 2 (Streaming)
  3. God of War (2018)
  4. Horizon: Zero Dawn
  5. Star Wars: Jedi - Fallen Order
  6. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
  7. Ghost of Tsushima
  8. Greedfall
  9. Borderlands 3
  10. Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope

Goal 2: Finish 5 other games

Goal 3: Platinum/Complete 5 Games

There may be a chance more than just The Witcher games will be streamed this year. Big secrets on that front! Hopefully, in the near future I can sort out some timing with someone else to stream with and we can get some multiplayer streams in as well.

Stay tuned for that news! In the meantime, if you wonder about how I work out what games I will finish, Complete or Platinum, you can check out my thoughts here.

What games will I be looking to finish this year? I am sure that the January 2021 Highlights will shed some light on what I am keen to play this year!

I wonder who I could be working out who to stream with?

So, a lot of gaming to look forward to in 2021. Even before looking at new releases! Here’s to another great year of gaming!

Until next time,
